Notes: John was the youngest son. He went to sea, and was Master of the 575t ship 'Sir Edward Parry' from 1853, which was engaged in the Indian Ocean trade including the transport of migrants to Australia. He married Margaret Mortimer (qv) in 1860 and returned to Orkney, but developed bronchitis and spent some time in the South of France to recover, returning again in 1861. When his brother William died in 1868 John inherited Roeberry in South Ronaldsay, and lived there as a landowner and farmer until he died at the age of 77. John married Margaret Spring MORTIMER, daughter of Alexander MORTIMER and Margaret SPRING, on 25 Jul 1860 in Banchory Devenick, Kincardineshire.1 (Margaret Spring MORTIMER was christened on 13 Mar 1827 in St Nicholas, Aberdeen,7 died on 16 Nov 1899 in South Ronaldsay, Orkney 8 and was buried in St Peter, South Ronaldsay, Orkney 6.) |
