bullet  Notes:

William was the fifth of the eight grandparents. His earliest known ancestor was John Gray of Roeberry in South Ronaldsay, although the Gray family is thought to have come to Orkney from Scotland in the mid-sixteenth century.

The second of three sons, William was born at Roeberry. He was sent to school in Aberdeen, and became engaged to Williamina Duff (qv) while studying medicine at Aberdeen University. Following a brief period as a General Practitioner he joined the Indian Medical Service in 1888, serving on the North West Frontier, and taking part as a medical officer in the Campaigns of Waziristan and The Buner Field Force. After he married Williamina in 1894 they lived in Raipur, Lucknow and Benares, where he was Medical Superintendant of Prisons. Their three children were born in India but educated in Britain. He retired in 1912 to Aberdeen, and died three years later from malaria while planning to return to India.
