Joy was the second of the eight grandparents. Her earliest known Stevens ancestor was Henry, a farmer in Ash in Surrey who died in 1606. The family moved to Hale in the 17th Century, and then to Farnham in the 18th Century. They continued with their farming interests, but were also landowners, and from the 19th Century educated many of the sons into the professions.
Joy was the youngest of four sisters, and was brought up in Farnham and educated in Winchester. After her marriage in 1914 she accompanied her husband first to Canada, then back to England where she raised her five children in a succession of vicarages. She continued to live in Dorset after her husband's death in 1965. She was a family historian, and kept up the Stevens and Chase records through her extensive family contacts.
