bullet  Notes:

The youngest surviving son, Alfred did not follow his two brothers to University but was instead apprenticed to a farmer in Kingsclere. He took over the family business as a landowner and hop farmer, living in Castle Street in Farnham, initially at no 62, then at no 45 after his marriage in 1844. He died after a fall from his horse when he was 38.

Alfred married Eliza Nichols (qv), the daughter of a wine merchant who lived at 4 Castle St, and had six children. After his death the five surviving children were brought up with the help of their maternal uncles. The eldest daughter Eliza (known as Amy) became the third wife of Rev John Bailey, who was a Vicar in Yorkshire and the Isle of Wight - she outlived her husband and retired to Shamley Green in Surrey. Alfred's eldest son James was educated at Corpus Christi College Cambridge and became a solicitor, first joining his uncle Ben Nichol's firm in Farnham, then setting up his own firm Stevens and Stevens, which subsequently became Stevens and Bolton. His wife Florence Julius was a family historian, and the author of unpublished notes on the Stevens family which have been extensively used in this research. Alfred's second son was Alfred (qv), and the third was Marlow who was also educated at Corpus Christi College Cambridge, and became a Vicar in Weston-super-Mare. The youngest daughter was Dora (qv).
