Francis was the second of three sons, and was born in Hopton, a farming and lead mining village near Carsington. He married Hannah Cadman (qv) who came from the neighbouring parish of Wirksworth. Seven of their 10 children married and had children. Their eldest daughter Hannah married William Ellis of Matlock. Their eldest son James (qv) moved to Horbury in Yorkshire. Their next married daughter Deborah moved to Sheffield, where her husband John Hale worked as a file cutter. Their next son Francis moved to Wakefield where he was a draper. Their next married daughter Mary moved to Gorseybank in Wirksworth, where her husband Joseph Maskrey was (probably) a stone mason. Their next son John also moved to Horbury, where he was first a weaver, then a gardener. Their youngest son Jacob was the only one to remain in Carsington, where he was a lead miner.
