Reginald was the seventh of the eight grandparents. His earliest known Balmer ancestor was Joseph Balmer of Sandford, a village on the Eden River in Westmorland. The next three generations were farmers, in Sandford, Bleatarn and Soulby.
Reginald was one of 10 surviving children from his father Robert's second marriage. He was brought up on the family farm in Soulby, and in 1891 was living with his brother-in-law Robert Kirk in Derby as an assistant farmer. By the time of his marriage to Jane Hughes (qv) in 1897 he was a grocer in Swinton, where their five children were born. By 1917 the family had moved to Disley in Cheshire, where Reginald worked as a Butter Merchant's buyer and salesman.
