The eldest son of a farmer in Chapel of Garioch, John moved to Aberdeen where he was a baker in Woodside. He married Helen Ferguson (qv) in 1832, and had six survivng children.

Their eldest son William was first a Minister in the Church of Scotland in Perthshire, and subsequently an accountant in Edinburgh: he married Amelia Fraser, a farmer's daughter from Perthshire. The next son John was a doctor in Aberdeen, and married Janet Tod, the daughter of an ironmonger in Edinburgh: he endowed the 'Wight Medical Bursaries' at the University of Aberdeen. The third son James was a druggist in Aberdeen, and did not marry. The oldest daughter Sarah (qv) married James Duff (qv), and was the only one of the six siblings to have children. The youngest son Alexander was an advocate in Aberdeen, and married Alice Anderson, the daughter of a solicitor from Fraserburgh. The youngest daughter Helen lived mainly in Aberdeen, and did not marry.
