Rev Cyril Francis CHASE ²

Cyril was the first of the eight grandparents. His earliest known Chase ancestor was Samuel, a yeoman and Baptist from Chesham who was buried in Luton in 1734, home for the next three generations. The fifth Samuel Chase (1787-1863) became a lawyer, joined the Established Church, and settled in Reading. The following three generations were Anglican clergymen.

Cyril was the youngest of four children, and educated at Repton School and Pembroke College Cambridge. He taught in Surrey for a few years, and was ordained in 1909. He was first a curate in Hampshire and Surrey, then in 1913 was appointed Rector of Belcarres in Saskatchewan in Canada, holding the post until 1919 when he returned to England. He was next a curate in Southampton; then in 1922 became Vicar of Woolston near Southampton, followed by Chew Magna in Somerset and Powerstock in Dorset. He retired when he was 70 to Corscombe in Dorset. He had a lifelong interest in the Scouting Movement, and was appointed Group Scoutmaster in 1960.

Cyril travelled to England in 1914 to marry his cousin Joy Stevens (qv). They had five children, the first two born in Canada, and the next three in England.
