bullet  Notes:

William Watts of Benenden in Kent was a farmer and clothmaker, which is how the family established its wealth. There was also a Watts family in the nearby village of Sandhurst, which was probably related, and there were links through marriage between the two families in later generations. William identified his wife and three children in his will. His daughter Joan was given some household goods, and may already have been provided for. His other daughter Alice was unmarried when William wrote his will in 1518, providing for her maintenance and marriage. William's only son John (qv) inherited his property in Benenden, including his clothmaking equipment.
