bullet  Notes:

William was probably a younger son, and had a small inheritance from his father Richard (qv). He lived in Cocking, midway between West Dean and Woolbeding in Sussex, for three years in the 1550s, but otherwise lived in his home village of Woolbeding. By the time of his death in 1583 he was a substantial landowner in Sussex and Hampshire, including the manor of Woolbeding which he had purchased 20 years previously. He is known from his will to have had at least two marriages, and had four children with his first wife, the daughter of John Aylwin (qv) of the Parish of West Dean, and two with his second wife Elizabeth. His first four children were his only son John who predeceased him, and three married daughters: Margaret Morey who also predeceased him; Joan Gray (qv); and Elizabeth Locke. As the eldest surviving daughter Joan Gray was his main beneficiary. William married again to Elizabeth Upton, the widow of Thomas Upton, and had two more daughters Agnes and Elizabeth.
