Rene ELPHINSTONE
(-1587) |
Rene ELPHINSTONE 1Notes: The Elphinstone family originally came from Saxony, where their name was Helfenstine, to England, and then in the 15th Century to Scotland, where one branch settled at Henderson in Peebleshire. The first Elphinstone to settle in Orkney was Rene (also known as Rainy and Ronald), who was born in France, where his father had moved from Henderson in the service of the Scottish Crown, and came to Orkney around 1580 with Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney. He was granted land at Hamegar near Stomness, and Rainybuster (house of Rainy). Rene married Janet Halcro (qv), and had two children: Robert (qv); and Harry, who was a Captain in the King of Denmark's Guards, and was killed in battle in Germany. Rene married Janet HALCRO, daughter of Rev Magnus HALCRO and Margaret SINCLAIR. |
