Robert was the surviving son of Rene Elphinstone (qv). He lived at Hamegar near Stromness, and married Elizabeth Smyth (qv). They had five children. Their eldest son James inherited his father's estate, but disposed of Hamegar in 1638, and had died by 1647. The next son was John (qv). The younger son was Charles, who was still living in 1647. Their daughters were Margaret, who had died by 1647, and Katherine, who married James Scollay of Tofts in Sanday.
