John WATTS
(1540-1620) |
John WATTS 2
Notes: The only son, John was sole executor and main beneficiary in his father's will. He married Elizabeth Gibbon (qv) in 1565, and had six children - five daughters and one son. Their eldest daughter Margaret married Walter Jones, the Vicar of Benenden, and had four children. Their next daughter Joan is only known from the baptism register. The next daughter Phillipa did not marry, and lived in Benenden where she died when she was 42. The next daughter Mary married William Spencer, a mercer from Rodmell in Sussex who settled in Benenden, and had four children. The youngest daughter Rose married John Gutsole, and had two children. The only son was William (qv). The Watts family in common with many other clothier families was strongly nonconformist, and two of John's children, Rose and William, got into trouble with the Church authorities for various ecclesiastic misdemenours. John married Elizabeth GIBBON, daughter of Jarvis GIBBON and Unknown, on 12 Feb 1565 in St George, Benenden, Kent.1 (Elizabeth GIBBON was buried on 25 Jun 1601 in St George, Benenden, Kent 1.) |
