bullet  Notes:

The elder of two brothers, John was a druggist in Aberdeen. He married the widow Sarah Mearns (qv) in 1794, and had four children who survived to adulthood. Their eldest son Andrew was educated at Marischal College at Aberdeen University, became a sugeon at Birse in the Dee Valley, and retired to Aberdeen. He married but is not known to have had any children. The next son William emigrated with his family to Ontario in Canada in the 1840s. He was a Presbyerian Minister, and Inspector for Public Schools in Dundas: two of his children were teachers, one emigrating to the US. John's eldest surviving daughter was Helen (qv) who married John Wight (qv), and the youngest daughter was Margaret who lived with her parents in Aberdeen. The family owned property in Gallowgate in Aberdeen - presumably the rental income helped to support the family after John died soon after the birth of his youngest child, as had his father and grandfather before him.
