Maurice was the oldest son, and was intitially brought up by his grandparents in Little Bentley, and then by his parents in Great Bentley. He was a farm worker in Great Bently all his life, as a labourer and horseman. He had a daughter Clara (qv) with his cousin Ann Taylor (qv) in 1861. Six years later he married Sarah Cudmore, also from Great Bentley. They had eight children. Their eldest daughter Elizabeth married David Eade, a railway ticket collector from Brighlingsea, and moved to Wood Green in Middlesex. Their eldest son Nathan was a farm worker in Great Bentley, and married Charlotte Hebert, the daughter of a labourer in Great Bentley. Their next son Albert was also a farm worker in Great Bentley: his wife Eliza Wright was a servant before their marriage. Their next daughter Julia was also a servant before her marriage to Henry Nunn, a farm worker in Great Bentley. Their next daughter Emily is thought to have married Arthur Kirby in 1900. Their next son James was a farm worker in Great Bentley, and married Alice Knappett, the daughter of a labourer in Tendring. Their youngest son Alfred was also a farm labourer in Great Bentley, and their youngest daughter was Alice.
