John was a farmer and landowner at Binscombe near Godalming in Surrey. He had three sons and a daughter with his wife Elizabeth (qv). His eldest son John inherited his property, but did not marry and died at the age of 34, leaving most of his estate to his younger brother William whose two sons farmed at Compton in Surrey. John snr's other son was Richard, a framework-knitter who had a daughter Ann and also died young. John snr's only daughter was Elizabeth (qv).
