bullet  Notes:

Samuel was a surgeon in Luton, as was his father and two youger brothers. He achieved some recognition as a result of his use of inoculation to prevent smallpox in 1787, prior to the discovery of cowpox. He died two years later at the relatively early age of 44, leaving three young children from his second marriage to be brought up by their mother Elizabeth (qv) and her sisters in Luton and Northampton.

His eldest daughter Elizabeth married Hewitt Fysh, a draper in London; their son Frederick was ordained in the Anglican Church but did not have a living. Samuel's younger daughter Harriet married James Scholefield, Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge University and Canon of Ely Cathedral. They had one son James Scholefield, who with neat symmetry was also ordained in the Anglican Church and did not have a living. Samuel's only son was also named Samuel (qv).
