bullet  Notes:

William was a brassfounder, following the trade of his father and two of his brothers. He did not join the family firm in Greenock, but formed a partnership with Robert Low in Dundee, dissolved shortly before William's death when he was 39.

William married Sarah Wight (qv), the daughter of a baker in Aberdeen. They had two children, brought up after William's death by their mother in Aberdeen. Their son John was educated at the University of Aberdeen and Pembroke College Oxford, where he studied classics. An outstanding scholar, he was appointed Professor of Classics at the University of Newcastle, and was the author of the standard text A Literary History of Rome in the Silver Age. John married Lizzie Mackay, the daughter of a carpet manufacturer from Aberdeen, and had two children, neither of whom married. William and Sarah's only daughter was Williamina (qv).
