BALLENDEN
Notes: He may have been the William Ballenden of Aikerness who was married to Margaret Stewart and whose estate was wound up in 1681; and was almost certainly descended from Patrick Ballenden of Stenness, the son of Thomas Ballenden of Auchinoule (near Selkirk in Scotland?) who was appointed in 1535 as a judge in the Court of Session by James V of Scotland. Patrick was made Sheriff of Orkney, obtained grants of church land, and was appointed Provost (chief magistrate) of Kirkwall in 1565. The Ballenden family was prominent in Orkney for 200 years, and although designated as of Stenness, lived at Aikerness in Evie, both on the Orkney mainland. Ballenden married. |
