John was a tailor and bailie in Kirkwall. He married Anna Louttit in 1655, and had four children, three daughters and a son, but only two have been traced after their baptisms. Their son James (qv) was also a bailie in Kirkwall, and their youngest daughter Margaret was the second wife of David Coventrie, also a bailie in Kirkwall.
