bullet  Notes:

The third of his father Samuel's five sons, Henry was brought up in Cambridge, Wellingborough and Nottingham, and educated at Mill Hill School and Kings College London. He qualified as a lawyer in London, and practiced in Nottingham with his older brother Samuel, and then from 1844 with Henry Chase (not a relation) in Reading, where his father had retired. In 1856 he was ordained in the Anglican Church, and for the next 20 years was a curate in Kent and Gloucestershire. He was appointed Vicar of Christ Church Weston-super-Mare in 1875, then became Perpetual Curate of St Mary Bishops Hatfield. He had a good business sense and was responsible for rebuilding some of these churches. He retired when he was 70, initially to Moreton in the Marsh in Gloucestershire (near Bourton on the Hill where he had been a curate), and then to Tunbridge Wells.

Henry and his wife Maria Corrie (qv), whom he had known from childhood in Wellingborough, had three surviving daughters and one son. Their eldest daughter Mary did not marry and lived at home with her parents, staying on in Tunbridge Wells after they died. Their next daughter Maria married Rev George Armitage, a widower whose daughter Charlotte from his first marriage later married Maria's cousin Frederick Chase. George died just three months after the birth of his and Maria's only daughter. Henry's third daughter Emily married her cousin Rev Arthur Custance, with whom she had nine children. Henry's only son was named Charles (qv).
