bullet  Notes:

He was the only son. Samuel was sent to London to learn the brewing trade, and after completing his apprenticeship became a Citizen and Brewer of London. At the age of 34 he married Margaret Alford, the widow of Philip Alford who had been a joint owner of the Swan Brewery in Whitechapel. Samuel soon became the sole proprietor of the Brewery, used the profits to purchase estates in Warwickshire and Buckinghamshire, was made Alderman of Cripplegate Ward in 1631, and was appointed one of the Sheriffs of London and Middlesex. He did not have any children with Margaret, and soon after she died in 1633 he married Mary Wood (qv).

Samuel and Mary had two children. Their son Caesar was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1634, then travelled abroad, staying in Paris where his uncle Sir Henry Wood was Treasurer of the household of Queen Henrietta Maria. He married Lelis de la Garde and brought her back to England in 1660, when he was appointed equerry to the Duke of York. Caesar was knighted in 1677, but lost his place in Court after the Revolution of 1688. He and Lelis had five children: their youngest son Charles was considered by Charles II to be eligible as a potential husband for his daughter Lady Mary Tudor, but the match was broken off; he eventually succeeded to the Wood estates and rebuilt Loudham Hall at great expense.

Samuel and Mary's only daughter was Mary (qv).
