Thomas was the eldest son of a farmer. His occupation is not known, but he was living in Sandford in the Parish of Warcop when he married Margaret Pearson in 1780. They had three surviving children: Joseph (qv), Mary and Robert. The two younger children lived in Warcop, and did not marry.
