Thomas was educated at Dedham Grammar School and Emmanuel College at Cambridge University. He then moved to Oxford University where he became a Fellow of Corpus Christi College in 1649. He was appointed Vicar of Little Baddow in Essex, but was ejected for non-conformity in 1662. He was subsequently a licensed preacher in Brentwood and Ratfliff in London, where he died aged 51.

Thomas had eight children with his wife Sarah, all baptised at Little Baddow. Their eldest son Isaac died in infancy. Their next son Thomas inherited land in Essex from his father, and was his executor. Next was Daniel, who became a Presbyterian Minister in Colchester. Their eldest daughter was Sarah (qv). Their next son Samuel is only know through his baptism record. Their youngest son Nathaniel was a Haberdasher in London. Their two youngest daughters Elizabeth and Rebecca were both left bequests in the will of their father and brother Nathaniel.
