bullet  Notes:

He was probably the John Alewin who farmed the Rectory of West Dean (known as Canons) in 1532, but at the time of his death in 1570 he was farming at Monkton, on the site of an abandoned medieval village near to the village of Chilgrove. He identified four sons and three daughters in his will, which showed that he was a reasonably prosperous farmer - his bequests included large numbers of sheep.

John had an unnamed daughter who was the first wife of William Ayling (qv) of Woolbeding, providing a link between the Aylwin and Ayling families of Sussex - William was appointed overseer in John's will. John's eldest son Richard (qv) also farmed at Monkton, and was his executor. His second son William had eight children with his wife Katherine Tregoose: in 1571 he moved from Canons to Treyford where he leased the Manor, inherited by his son Robert after his death in 1592. John's son Robert inherited 100 sheep from his father: his wife Joan was accused (but found not guilty) of witchcraft in the 1570s. John established his youngest son Thomas at Staple Ash, close to Monkton, where he farmed and had eight children. John's other two daughters Isabelle and Elizabeth were given small inheritances.
