Robert was a dyer. He firstly married Marie Rousay, and had a son Robert. He next married Isabella Ballenden, daughter of Adam Bellenden (qv), the Laird of Stenness. They had four children: their daughter Margaret (qv) married James Kaa (qv), and their three sons were Arthur, George and Thomas, but little more is known about them.
