bullet  Notes:

The sixth of 12 children, Samuel worked with his father in Earl Fitzwilliam's coal mines in Elsecar, and was then engaged to work in the Earl of Lichfield's collieries and furnaces in the Black Country. He is thought to have eloped with his wife Hannah Colley (qv), who came from Sheffield. Their two eldest children, Barnabas (qv) and Mary, were born in Elsecar. The family moved around 1801 to Darlaston in Staffordshire, where their other six children were born, and then to Bentley near Walsall. Two of their daughters are known to have married: Rhoda to Joseph Mitchell, a coal miner of Silkstone in Yorkshire and Lane Head in Staffordshire; and Mary Ann, who firstly married Jasper Neath, an engineer in Willenhall, and secondly to Joseph Nash who worked on the railways, also in Willenhall: Mary Ann emigrated with her surviving children and second husband to the oil fields of Pennsylvania in the 1860s.
