John was one of the younger sons of John Cranmer of Aslockton in Nottinghamshire. He settled in Alcester in Warwickshire, where he was a tenant farmer. He had two children with his wife Joan Maynard (qv). Their daughter Anne married Lewis Cooke of Statford upon Avon, and later inherited the family farm from her younger brother Samuel (qv).
