Mary was the oldest surviving daughter of Thomas Wood of Hackney who was employed in the Royal Household. She firstly married Samuel Cranmer (qv), a widower who was twice her age, and may have been a relative as her mother was also a Cranmer. They had two children. After Samuel died she married again in 1643 to Henry Chester, the brother of Sir Anthony Chester (qv). Henry was largely responsible for preserving the Chester family fortunes through the Civil War. Mary's daughter Mary (qv) later married Henry's nephew Anthony Chester (qv).
