Thomas was born in Ford, a village near the border with Scotland, but neither his baptism nor his marriage have been traced. He was a mason, and was living in Milfield near Ford for the baptism of his eldest son Robert in 1821, then moved to Alnwick. He had five children with his wife Elizabeth, but only two are known to have survived to adulthood: James (qv); and Elizabeth, who married James Smart, a rope maker and Inn keeper in Alnwick, and had 10 children.
