Notes:
Thomas was his father's heir, and lived in Aslockton. He and his wife Agnes Hatfield (qv) of Willoughby had seven children: four girls and three boys. Their daughters Agnes and Dorothy were not mentioned in their father's will of 1501, so were presumably already married: Agnes to Edmund Cartwright of Ossington in Nottinghamshire, and Dorothy to Harold Rosell, Clerk to the Kitchen of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Their eldest son was John (qv), who remained in Aslockton.
Their next two sons Thomas and Edmund were still at school when their father died, but their mother was able to send them to Cambridge University to study for the priesthood. Thomas was a scholar and theologian with strong Protestant sympathies, and gained the attention of King Henry VIII for supporting the position that the King's marriage with Catherine of Aragon was null and void. Thomas was appointed as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1533, introduced many reforms to the Church during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI, and was closely involved with the development of the Book of Common Prayer, a significant contribution to English Literature and the Reformation. However, soon after the accession of Queen Mary (the daughter of Catherine of Aragon) Thomas was tried for treason and heresy, and was executed in Oxford in 1556. Although Thomas is not thought to have substantially benefited from his position, he did help his relatives through patronage, including his brother Edmund who was appointed Archdeacon of Canterbury in 1535. Thomas and Edmund both married and had children.
Thomas and Agnes' two younger daughters were Margaret and Emmet, and are thought to have married after the death of their father.
